Overview, Liposuction techniques

  • Liposuction is the most commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure in the Western World.
  • Liposuction procedure is the removal of unwanted fatty tissue from the body.
  • Liposuction techniques could be performed on localized fat deposits of the body but commonly are performed on: abdomen, hips/love handles, thighs, buttocks, knees, calves, jaw line and under chin, arms, male chest liposuction and breast in female.
  • Liposuction is for contouring and reshaping any part of the body. However, liposuction is not a method of weight loss.
  • Liposuction has an outstanding safety record provided that adequate care has been taken to select the patient and it is performed in a clean and hygienic environment which is adequately equipped (operating room). Although there is a common surgical ground between liposuction techniques, it is clear from studies that the doctor's experience, skills and adequate training in his/her method of liposuction practice is also crucial to the outcome of that particular method of liposuction.
  • Several different liposuction techniques are in use but the most common currently in use and effective methods of liposuction are:
  • Liposuction like any other surgery has some side-effects.
  • Recovery from any liposuction procedure depends on the method of liposuction and the number of area(s) treated. However, although trauma and manipulation of tissues in PAL makes recovery relatively prolonged, in cases of UAL and LAL the total energy delivered to the tissues also plays a part in recovery.
  •  After liposuction, depending on the area of body and the liposuction method, a support garment needs to be worn for between 2 days to 12 weeks.
  • Although the cost of liposuction depends on the number of area(s) of the body to be liposuctioned, the method of liposuction, general or local anaesthesia, it also depends on the doctor and hospital location within a city or country. However, it is known in marketing practices that charging high prices to customers has a positive psychological effect on the customers. Because the customer perceives that it has been offered much better services compared with other competitors in the same industry. Common side-effects of liposuction are:
    • Discomfort, soreness and pain.
    • Bruising and swelling
    • Bleeding
    • Temporary numbness.
    • Drainage from the incision sites.
    • Seroma
    • Damage to nerves, blood vessels and other organs.
    •  Infection
    • Burning ( laser and radiofrequency).
    • Risks of general anaesthesia.
    • Risks of medications used in general and local anaesthesia.
    • Psychological effects of liposuction and cosmetic treatment.
    • Other rare complications.
