We surgically remove a wide range of benign lesions under local anaesthesia. We also use minimally invasive technologies such as Smartlipo, Vaser and Body Water-jet which are safe, effective, quick, affordable and straightforward for lipoma removal.

  • What is a lipoma?

A lipoma is a slowly growing localised benign fatty lump usually underneath of the skin but lipoma can occur in any part of the body where fat is found. Deeply situated lipoma can be mistaken for other swellings. Lipomas are varying in size from a small marble to larger than a football with lobulated and ragged surface and smooth in outline without any pain.
  • Can lipoma cause any problems?

Lipomas are usually asymptomatic. It means lipoma usually causes no symptoms or problem even in the long-term and can be left alone.
  • If lipomas are harmless, why do remove lipomas?

There several reasons for lipoma removal:

    • Cosmetic reasons; often the only reason for request to remove lipoma by the patient is unsightly appearance.
    • Occasionally, the reason for lipoma removal is pressure on the surrounding structure and symptoms, for example, pressing on a nerve causing discomfort and pain.
    •  Incidental finding of deeply situated lipomas on imaging tests such as ultrasound, MRI and CT Scanning.
    • If lipoma grow very large and restricts movement.
    • If the diagnosis is uncertain and need to be differentiated from more dangerous and serious in nature lumps.
    • If the lipoma cause any trouble on account of its site, size, appearance or presence of symptoms.
    • Despite reassurance by the medical profession, there are still some people who believe that an abnormal lesion such as lipoma should not be left on their body.
    • Individuals might notice rubbing or interference with clothing and restriction of movement in their joints if lipoma is close to those areas.
  • What are the causes of lipomas?

Lipomas occur at any age but they are more common in middle age from 40 to 60 years old, effecting one in hundred people. Lipoma can occur as a part of rare inherited conditions and there is also tendency to develop lipoma in genetically conditions such as familiar multiple lipotosis. Furthermore laboratory studies in mice reveals a correlation between a particular gene and obesity and lipoma formation and support previous studies. There is another controversial opinion that minor trauma could triggered the growth of a lipoma (post-traumatic lipoma).

  • What are the treatment options for lipomas?

The usual treatment for lipomas is surgical removal under local anaesthesia. At Doctors Makeover, our cosmetic surgery clinic, apart from surgical removal, we also use advanced laser, Vaser and Body Water-jet for melting and removing the fat content of lipomas almost without any scar. We can, through a tiny hole in the skin,  dissolve and melt the lipoma by revolutionary devices such as laser (Smartlipo), ultrasound (Vaser) and gentle action of water-jet (Body Water-jet) which also tightened skin and contracts the tissues with smooth and even finish. Therefore, there is no need for surgical intervention and all the procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia and it takes up to an hour, depending on the size and size of the lipoma. The main benefit of using these minimally invasive technologies is speedy recovery and almost no remnant scar.
  • What are the complications of lipoma removal?

Post-lipoma minor operation includes: reaction to local anaesthetics, discomfort, bruising, swelling, bleeding and infection at the site of the operation. However, we usually use laser (Smartlipo), ultrasound (Vaser) and gentle action of water-jet (Body Water-jet) with minimal trauma and less risk of complications. At your initial free no obligation consultation, we will supply you with information and help you in making decision on the best treatment option for removal of your lipoma.
