  • What is Breast enlargement?

Large breasts are unique feature of feminine appearance and some women feel better in their clothes with overall improvement in the body image and increase in their sense of self-confidence. Breast enlargement is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of female breast usually by inserting implants but breast enhancement can also be achieved by autologous fat transfer. However, relatively small and sagging breasts particularly after pregnancy, breast feeding and weight loss, need a combination of breast uplift and enlargement. Therefore, the breasts look larger and fuller in appearance.
  • What are the main methods of breast enlargement?

The most common method of breast enlargement is by way of using saline-filled and silicone gel filled breast implants. However, we are also able to use your own fat (autologous fat transfer) to more naturally enhance and enlarge your own breasts, please read more on breast fat transfer. We also occasionally use filler such as Macrolane for breast enhancement.
  • Who is a good candidate for a breast enlargement?

Breast enlargement best suit ladies with small breasts in proportion to their body size and shape. The candidate for breast enlargement like any other cosmetic surgery should be physically healthy emotionally stable with realistic and achievable expectations. Women with small breasts are candidate for breast enlargement but sagging breasts of any size and shape after weight loss and pregnancies can be uplifted and enlarged with breast enlargement operation. However, because of the effects of pregnancy on the breasts, if you are planning to have more children it might be a good idea to postpone your breast cosmetic enlargement operation. There are also women who undergone operations for breast cancer and other breast problems and breast enlargement in combination with breast reconstruction can help them with their breast appearance.
  • How can you prepare for your breast enlargement cosmetic surgery?

There are number of steps you can take to reduce risks of your breast enlargement operation and speed up your recovery and healing process from the breast enhancing operation. At your initial consultation, we might arrange some blood tests, according to your past medical history and circumstances.

It is known that smoking increase the risk of operation and retards wound healing therefore, it is best to stop smoking at least two weeks before the breast enlargement operation. Certain drugs such as aspirin and some other painkillers thinner blood and promote extensive bruising and bleeding, therefore, it is best to substitute them with paracetamol a few days (preferably a week) before the breast enlargement operation. For the same reason some other medications might also cause problem and interfere with other medications and complicate the post operative period. In addition, there is some evidence that certain herbal remedies could be dangerous to surgical patients and all herbal/haemopatic medications should be discontinued at least two weeks before your breast enlargement operation. If you are going to have sedation apart from local anaesthetic medications or general anaesthesia, then you must not eat or drink anything for at least six hours before your breast enlargement operation.

Some people take vitamin E, vitamin C, multivitamins and arnica preparations to reduce post-operative bruising and help recovery. If you are interested in using such over the counter remedies, please discuss the matter with your cosmetic surgeon at the consultation.

  • How is breast enlargement (breast enhancement or boob job) surgery carried out?

There are several techniques of surgery for cosmetic breast enlargement or enhancement depending on the shape and size of the breast. Breast enlargement is usually achieved by insertion of a breast implant underneath each breast after meticulously making a packet usually between the breast and the front of the chest. Fat transfer to breast can also enhance some breasts. We use Body Water-jet to remove excess fat deposits from your own body (liposuction) and prepare your own fat before injecting the fat cells inside your breast. Therefore, we are able to combine liposuction from one or more areas of the body with breast enhancement procedure at the same time. Breast enlargement with implant insertion is usually carried out under general anaesthesia but we perform breast fat transfer with Body Water-jet liposuction under local anaesthesia with sedation. The aim of breast enlargement or enhancement is to increase breast volume with natural contour of the breast on the chest wall.
  • What the main types of breast enlargement?

There are several techniques for breast implant insertion but the most common approaches are; around nipple area (areolar approach), through the armpit (axillary approach) and the crease under the breast (submammary approach. Therefore, Breast enlargement is usually achieved by insertion of a breast implant under each breast between the breast and the chest wall. However, there are less invasive alternative methods of breast enlargement for example, in selected cases, at a single combined procedure we remove the excess fat deposits from your own body by using minimally invasive technology such as Body Water-jet (liposuction) then the prepared fat cells are transplanted into the breast by injections to enhance the breasts size with natural contour of the breast.
  • Does breast enlargement hurt?

We carry out breast enhancement/enlargement under local aesthetic medications with sedation. However, the extent of the breast enlargement operation is depending on the size of the breast, the technique being used and other individual patient factors. The breast might be painful from a few days in breast fat transfer but for longer period of time in more extensive breast enlargement operation and implant insertion. Please read more on pain.
  • How long does breast enlargement surgery take?

The duration of the operation depends on several factors as there are different sizes of breasts and the technique which has been used for the breast lift and if the implant is also being used the operation can last up to two hours but breast fat transfer takes longer, depending on the number of the area(s) to be liposuctioned, fat cell preparation and transfer (injection) into the breasts.
  • How long does it take to see the breast enlargement results?

Immediately after the breast enlargement operation you will notice the change in the shape and size of the breast. You will need to wear a support bra for about two months after your operation to help reshape your breasts and a smooth recovery period, particularly after breast fat transfer.
  • What can I do after my breast enlargement operation to speed my recovery and obtain better results?

Some pain and discomfort are common in the first 24 hours. You can walk around the house but it is best to avoid strenuous activity and lifting anything more than 3kg in weight during it is recommended that you should drink at least 6 glasses of water in addition to tea, coffee and soft drinks during the first 3 days after your operation. As alcohol opens up veins and might cause bleeding or extensive bruising it is best to be avoided for several days particularly if you are taking any other medications. We advise against driving during the first two days after your breast enlargement operation if you had sedation or general anaesthesia. Before leaving our clinic we will inform you about your post-operation follow up appointment which should be within a week after the operation. You can slowly increase your activity during the following two weeks but you should not raise your arm up or reach your back for 3 weeks. We also recommend that you should avoid some sport such as tennis and other racquetball games, bowling, ice skating and any form of skiing for about 3 months because it may lead extensive bruising and bleeding.
